Texas Speed Limits on the Rise to 85 mph

A controversy of speed limits recently hit the Texas court system. While Texas lawmakers put forth effort to increase speed limits on future highways, others claim that the rise in speed will concurrently raise accident and fatality rates. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic deaths dropped in 2010 and are averaging a record low since 1949. If the traffic deaths are dropping, people are curious to know what will happen when the speed starts increasing.

The fear derives from the simple fact that traveling at faster speeds, such as 85mph and wrecking can be far more fatal then a collision at 40 mph. Some arguments have added Texas blazing temperatures and heated pavement into the mix, stating that blowouts are more likely to occur in Texas, which is potentially deadly at 85 mph. Tire companies defend the high speeds by explaining that with proper maintenance, tire pressure and inflation, tires can withstand heat and speeds up to 112 mph. Regardless of what the speed limit on interstates, people will exceed 85 miles per hour. If the speed limit is 85, people will test the limitations and drive 95. Whether the speed limit is the right decision or not, the Senate will decide shortly and inform the nation whether or not Texas is granted their “Need for Speed.”

Texas House of Representatives passed the legislation, putting the ball in the senate court. If the speed limit is approved by the senate, Texas will hold the record for highest top speed limits in the nation. The speed limit, if passed, will be allocated for new roads constructed and engineered to be safe for such speeds.
